When you’re faced with getting up in the middle of the night, every hour spent in bed is invaluable. Enter the airport hotel: convenience and comfort based slap bang in the middle of the airport.
With 821 bedrooms, The Hilton is a staple choice offering everything a weary traveller needs: from business lounges and bars and restaurants to large beds, flat-screen TVs and room service.
I was on the executive floor – a level costing a little extra for the convenience of lounge access with computers with internet connection, newspapers and magazines and light refreshments in the evening including wines and beer. Guests can also check in and out here away from the main reception area of the lobby, which was heaving at 10pm on the Friday of my visit.
The hotel benefits from a recent refurbishment of the main lobby area, which now has an open-plan restaurant/bar area, while the popular sports bar has been expanded.
My room was practical and comfortable with a large bathtub, a king-size bed and a TV offering several TV and movies channels, while the decor was both calming and modern.
Despite departing from the north terminal, the Gatwick Hilton, based in the south terminal, was still only a 10-minute walk away, delivering me right to the desired check-in desk. Success.
