Maria Pieri has a sneak preview of the 55th BFI London Film Festival

Review

The 55th BFI London Film Festival in partnership with American Express (12-27 October) gives film lovers a sneak preview of a raft of upcoming films.
The festival opens with alternative romantic comedy 360, directed by Fernando Meirelles (City of God) and starring Rachel Weisz and Anthony Hopkins. Also featuring in the programme will be Anonymous, directed by Roland Emmerich, starring Vanessa Redgrave and Rhys Ifans, a political thriller questioning who actually penned Shakespeare’s classics. The finale will see the UK premiere of The Deep Blue Sea, an adaptation of Terence Rattigan’s play, directed by Terence Davies (Distant Voices, Still Lives). Films are screened at the BFI Southbank and BFI Imax in Waterloo.
As for the rest of the autumn crop, there are some classics to watch out for: The Adventures of Tintin in October, Wuthering Heights in November and a whole host of remakes from Footloose to The Thing. Happy watching.

Contrary to popular belief, the nickname Big Ben actually refers to the great bell of Westminster's clock tower rather than the clock itself. Construction of the tower was completed in 1859, with the first strikes of the bell heard on 31 May of that year.
