How far? 68 miles, 1hr by train.
Why go? Winchester is best-known for its
11th-century cathedral, where famous novelist
Jane Austen lies at rest and about which The
New Vaudeville Band sang their novelty pop hit
Winchester Cathedral in 1966. The cathedral
has the longest nave and overall length of any
Gothic cathedral in Europe. Other important
historical buildings include the Great Hall,
which for more than 600 years has reputedly
housed the legendary King Arthur’s Round
Table, and Winchester College, a public school
founded in 1382. The compact Hampshire
city is popular for its shopping and street
architecture, its floral summer season and
quirky open-air events.
