Greenwich Market

Marketwatch

Just 20 minutes from central London on the bank of the Thames, Greenwich has a fascinating maritime history and magnificent architecture, but for many its main attraction is the famous market that has had royal charter since 1700. Greenwich Market attracts more than two million visitors each year and is widely regarded as one of the best places in London to buy unusual gifts created by talented, up-and-coming designers. While many shops are open daily, this ancient covered market, with its cobbled flagstones, comes to life from Wednesdays to Sundays (10am-5.30pm), when it buzzes with more than 150 stalls selling everything from furniture to fashion items. While Wednesdays are predominantly involved with food - you can taste and buy a variety of local and organic produce - Thursdays and Fridays focus on antiques, arts and crafts.

To make way for St Pancras Station, a graveyard was demolished and 8,000 bodies removed. You can still see a pile of the old gravestones at St Pancras New Church by the Hardy Tree.
