Looking cool in Camden Town

Neighbourhood
Neighbourhood

Head to Camden Town and hang out with the in-crowd at markets and hip music venues, says Chris Horton.

Eat: Made in Brasil

A beach-party vibe enlivens this latenight spot. Dishes include Brazilian black bean and pork stews, mixed barbecue with cassava and tapassized nibbles. The beach-style bar serves 70 varieties of sugarcane liquor cachaca and cocktails.
112 Inverness Street, NW1 7HJ. T: 020 7482 0777. www.made-in-brasil-bar.co.uk

Alternative: Cottons. Caribbean fare includes salt fish fritters, jerk chicken and curried goat.

Drink: The Hawley Arms

Gutted by fire in 2008 but still the rock star of pubs. Amy Winehouse started off singing here and still props up the bar, as do Kate Moss and Razorlight singer Johnny Borrell. By day, recline in a sofa or on the terrace. By sunset, it’s a tight squeeze amid the jukebox din.

Alternative: Bar Vinyl. A funky, friendly DJ bar mixing cutting-edge beats with a range of affordable drinks and snacks.

Shop: What Goes Around Comes Around

If box-fresh Reebok Insta send your pulse racing, head here for rare oldschool trainers. The retro wonderland also stocks 1940s-80s clothing, from jumpers, shorts and trousers to skirts, school badges, bandanas and scarfs.
Camden Stables Market, Arch 47, NW1 8AH. T: 020 7424 9621. www.myspace.com/wgacr

Alternative: Ray Man. An Aladdin’s cave of quirky international musical instruments, from African djembes to Chinese zithers.
54 Chalk Farm Road, NW1 8AN. T: 020 7692 6261. www.rmmusicshop.moonfruit.com

Visit: Camden Markets

Visit these six adjoining markets on the weekend and join 100,000 others browsing stalls and shops selling alternative and vintage clothing, bric-a-brac, arts and crafts, and much more. Or sit next to Regent’s Canal to sample fast food from all corners of the globe. www.camdenlock.net

Alternative: The Roundhouse. A legendary music venue in the ’60s and ’70s, it now hosts a variety of theatre and dance events, too.
Chalk Farm Road, NW1 8EH. T: 020 7424 9991. www.roundhouse.org
